Obama awards VP Joe Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom

In a speech meant to honor Vice President Joe Biden, President Barack Obama did the unexpected and awarded Biden with the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction. PBS NewsHour will live stream the event at 3 p.m. ET.

Vice President Biden seemed genuinely surprised when President Obama called military aids to the podium and awarded him with the medal.

Biden and Obama brought up their most memorable moments from the past eight years, showered each other with compliments and even referenced their "bromance" as their time in the White House drew to a close. "This makes him the finest vice president we have ever seen, and I also think he has been a lion of American history".

'I thought we were coming over Michelle, for you and Jill, and for Barack and I to toast one another and say what an incredible journey it's been'.

Choking up and becoming tearful at several points, Biden said he had "no inkling" he would be receiving the medal, and he praised Obama for allowing him to take a lead role in many key issues. "Mr. President, you have crept into our heart, you and your whole family".
