Andy Puzder withdraws nomination after losing Republican support

Editor's Note: Puzder said around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday that he is withdrawing as President Donald Trump's nominee for labor secretary, according to The Associated Press. He previously served as the first Hispanic assistant attorney general and as US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, as well as on the National Labor Relations Board.

While Puzder, Trump's first pick for Labor secretary, was an outspoken outsider, Acosta's name might not be more familiar to most Senate members.

Rumors of his withdrawal had swirled since early January, with his confirmation hearings long-delayed due to tardy financial disclosure forms.

Acosta is the Dean at the Florida International University College of Law. How likely is it that Acosta will be confirmed as Labor secretary? President George W. Bush nominated him to the National Labor Relations Board, an independent US government agency tasked with enforcing US Labor law in collective bargaining and unfair labor practices. Acosta is the first Hispanic nominee for the cabinet put forth by the president. Prior to his announcement, Puzder had been forced to reschedule his nomination hearing four times.

Puzder's decision to withdraw is yet another setback for the White House still grappling with the fallout from the resignation of national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Ever since his nomination for the position of labor secretary was announced a year ago, Puzder has been a lightning rod for controversy, as he's faced past allegations of both spousal abuse and mistreatment of his workers.

Puzder's past had been called into question over the last few days, after Politico published a 1990 episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" where Puzder's ex-wife, Lisa Fierstein, accused him of domestic abuse. "Whereas in other parts of the country, you often get people that are saying, "I can't believe I have to work this job, ' with the immigrant population, you have the 'thank God I have this job" kind of attitude". Puzder's ex-wife has since retracted her allegations while Puzder has denied any wrongdoing.
