Congressman demands to know whether Trump knew Flynn took Russian Federation money

But he declined to state the amount, saying that the source of the funds was his U.S. speakers bureau, not the Russian broadcaster, which USA intelligence agencies describe as an instrument of the Russian government.

After his speaker's bureau, Leading Authorities, took its 25 per cent take, Flynn got $33,750, for an event celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the outlet.

According to the documents, Flynn also received $11,250 from a Russian charter cargo airline and $11,250 from a Russia-based cybersecurity corporation, though neither of those companies were state-owned.

The cargo company had been suspended as a United Nations vendor following corruption scandal, and the cybersecurity company was trying to expand its business with the US government.

In a letter he addressed to Trump, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and FBI Director James Comey, Cummings asked whether Flynn fully disclosed his links to Russian Federation and Turkey before he received a national security clearance and was named to the White House post.

Flynn resigned under pressure just weeks into his tenure after it was revealed he multiple contacts with Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak during the transition, and didn't disclose to Vice President Mike Pence and others that sanctions on Russia were discussed. He recently registered with the Justice Department acknowledging he worked as a foreign agent previous year representing the Turkish government.

At the time, he was working on a volunteer basis as a military adviser on Trump's presidential campaign.

Flynn and his son also received an unspecified amount in expenses paid by RT for business-class flights to and from Moscow and for their three-day stay at the Hotel Metropol.

House Democrats quickly seized on the documents as evidence that Flynn may have violated the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits top government officials from accepting payments from foreign governments. The biggest paycheck came from RT, which handed over $45,000, and during that evening, he also dined next to Vladimir Putin.

A lawyer for Flynn didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. That security clearance was suspended last month, pending further review.

Cummings said he has given the Trump administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Defense Department until April 7 to produce documents related to Flynn's contacts with foreign nationals and any documentation of funds he received from foreign sources.

Word of Flynn's paid work on behalf of Russian entities adds to the mystery swirling around reports of Trump campaign officials' links to the Kremlin. They include how Flynn answered questions about his contact with foreign nationals, his work for foreign governments and businesses, and any global real estate holdings.

"I can not recall any time in our nation's history when the president selected as his national security advisor someone who violated the Constitution by accepting tens of thousands of dollars from an agent of a global adversary that attacked our democracy", Cummings said. After his resignation from Trump's Cabinet, Flynn retroactively registered his activities as an agent representing Turkey in a filing earlier this month.
