Wichita State's balance pushes Shockers past Dayton

Marshall and his Shockers get another chance to bolster their case when they face No. 2 Kentucky on Sunday in Indianapolis. I mean, every coach studies the analytics.

Kansas and Wichita State were first round winners in the NCAA mens basketball tournament Friday.

Dayton's experience, depth and emotional goal will be the difference in this game - take the Flyers plus the points as Oskeim Sports' Free Pick for Friday, March 17!

Feeling no pressure from 78 years of NCAA drought, McIntosh sank his free-throws and the OTHER Wildcat Nation in this year's Big Dance partied it up, March Madness style, from Utah to IL.

The game tips off at 7:10 ET on CBS.

12 - Game winning streak for UK.

10th - Time John Calipari has led a team to a 30-win season. Malik is a high-level player, capable of taking over the game by making challenged-shots and by making clutch plays.

Wichita State certainly took pride in knocking off the Flyers, despite the fact that they are ranked higher nationally and were favored by Las Vegas' odds.

"The thing they did all season was hit threes", United Kingdom coach John Calipari said after the game.

Add to that Wichita State having a collective chip on its shoulder as a mid-major facing mighty Kentucky and, well, this could be fun.

Playing angry is Wichita State's basketball trademark.

Lavone Holland, a 6-foot-1 guard, threw down a driving dunk, and when freshman Carson Williams scored from the lane, Northern Kentucky was within 23-21 and the Wichita State fans in the building were howling with delight, preferring to play the Norse rather than the Wildcats in the second round.

It was a great matchup between two teams that anyone should like to see play each other: the Missouri Valley champions against the Atlantic 10 regular-season champions, owners of a combined 54 wins entering the NCAA Tournament, with recent success in the Big Dance under highly regarded coaches.

Archie Miller and Gregg Marshall are two of the tournament's better coaches, and could be in line for bigger jobs in the off-season. Really, this game is too close to pick either way.

There are 8 2nd round games on the schedule for Saturday.

No. 7 Dayton 58, No. 10 Wichita State 64: Wichita State's high-flying offense didn't get off the ground until the closing minutes, when the Shockers played like the more tournament-experienced team and pulled away to a 64-58 victory over Dayton on Friday night. Without many upset yesterday, expect the unexpected in what promise to be an exciting Day 2 of March Madness.
