Golovkin's KO Streak Ends with Arguable Decision Win Over Jacobs

It nearly looked as if Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) would become the monster we had expected when he dropped Jacobs with a right hand in the fourth round.

Golovkin tried to follow up, but Jacobs' defense was solid.

In by far the toughest fight of his stellar career, Golovkin often was stymied by Jacobs changing to a left-handed style. Gennady Golovkin (37-0) faces Daniel Jacobs (32-2) in the main event. He has won ten fights since, and those triumphs include a brutal beating of his good friend and NY neighbor, Peter Quillen. I definitely think it could've been a draw - at least. He won the fight via unanimous decision (115-112, 115-112, 114-113) over Jacobs. He has beaten cancer and only lost one fight, which coincidentally was to Dmitry Pirog - the man who retired from boxing after a back injury in preparation to fight GGG. They want the big fight [for Golovkin against Canelo Alvarez], and Daniel Jacobs got X'd out. "There were many times during the fight I went toe-to-toe because I knew I could".

The Brooklyn native is on a 12 fight winning streak and his power is unquestioned having banished the likes of Sergio Mora, Peter Quillin and Jarrod Fletcher inside the distance.

"I told Golovkin he had to kill me in order to win this fight".

Jacobs certainly never underestimated Golovkin and started as a wide underdog in his home city, and has had to smile through three months of people patting him on the back, wishing him luck and then shaking their heads in anticipation of his battering.

Perhaps for the first time, Golovkin appeared to be the smaller man in the ring and that made his bullying, aggressive style hard to implement.

Jacobs didn't win the fight, though. So much so, the last 30 days of his fight, Golovkin was overweight by two kilos.

In the end, the judges seemed to favour the meatier work of Golovkin over the clever, strategic boxing of Jacobs and "GGG" retained a plethora of middleweight titles by scores of 115-112, 115-112 and 114-113. At any rate, the future is bright for both of these men in this fight game. He didn't come forward disrespectfully like he did with every other fighter before me. "GGG" has his sights on a mega fight with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez later this year and some question his focus going in against Jacobs, but at the Friday morning weigh-ins, the Kazakhstani came in looking as fierce as ever.

Jacobs pressed on and knocked the cloak of indestructibility squarely off GGG's shoulders.

"He's my best opponent, he is very smart, he had very good boxing skill, " Golovkin said.

"I think I won the fight, and I think the fans support me", Jacobs said, per Rafael.
