Braves beat Padres 5-2 on opening night at new stadium

The Braves played in the old stadium, built for the 1996 Olympics, for only 20 years.

San Diego Padres shortstop Erick Aybar (8) throws out Atlanta Braves' Dansby Swanson after fielding a ground ball in the first inning of a baseball game, Saturday, April 15, 2017, in Atlanta. Aaron tossed the underhand pitch to Cox, the former manager who had a new bronze statue unveiled at a stadium entrance on Thursday.

Of that move from Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium to the Ted, Jones recalled what opening night was like for those 1997 Braves, who were fresh off their second straight World Series appearance.

ATLANTA (AP) - On a night of firsts, Ender Inciarte saved the best for last.

"I think it's a lot more intimate", Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. "Everybody was pumped in the dugout and you could feel the excitement of the crowd".

They saw the Braves win their second consecutive game after a 1-6 start. After winning four of six following a 1-3 start, the Padres have dropped two in a row with two games remaining on a seven-game road trip. Inciarte gave Atlanta some breathing room in the sixth with a two-run shot to right.

In roughly 48 hours, Inciarte matched his output for 2016 with three homers.

"I told Matt he's got to get ready quick", Inciarte quipped.

Julio Teheran picked up the win on the mound for the Braves.

Jeremy Hellickson (2-0) allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. Jim Johnson worked the ninth for his second save.

"I've always tried to pitch relaxed and be in a good place when it's my turn", Colon said through a translator.

There was plenty of pomp for the unveiling of the new suburban stadium, which replaced the Braves' downtown home of the last two decades, Turner Field.

In addition to Jones, Braves legends Hank Aaron, Bobby Cox, Tom Glavine, Dale Murphy, Phil Niekro, John Smoltz were present.

Atlanta has won three straight following a five-game losing streak, including its first two games at SunTrust Park. Even at 83 years old, Aaron is still one of the most recognizable names and faces in Braves' history and basball as a whole.

"I like the way they have taken different aspects from different parks", Witzel said. "To see everybody come back, you just kind of step back and realize what kind of organization you are a part of".

Chacin (1-2) took the loss, as Teheran's RBI single in the fourth put the Braves up 3-2. Wil Myers had 17 hits, 10 runs and nine RBI heading into the weekend, while Manuel Margot had 14 hits, eight runs and three homers in that time.

With the score 1-1 in the seventh, Haniger hit a drive that appeared to clear the left-field wall for a three-run homer, before bouncing back into the field of play.

Five restaurants were open Friday night: Terrapin, First and Third, the Yard House, Antico Pizza and Live! The stands were full before the first pitch, indicating no major traffic issues at a stadium built along one of the busiest interchanges in a city notorious for its bumper-to-bumper jams. The Braves should be able to get after Cahill, who is coming off the 10-day disabled list after experiencing a lower back strain coming out of his first start of the season.

Dellin Betances pitched a scoreless eighth, while Aroldis Chapman allowed a pair of baserunners but ultimately earned his third save.
