Geoffrey Kirui and Edna Kiplagat win the Boston Marathon

Kiplagat showed up in Boston on Monday morning with something to prove. The number will be retired after the marathon - something Switzer called a "great honor".

Edna Kiplagat, a Kenyan policewoman and two-time world champion marathoner, finished first in the women's race with a time of 2:21:52. "Fifty years later, women make up nearly half the field at Boston".

There's also a picture of Kyriakides tackling Heartbreak Hill in Newton, this is said to be the most hard part of the race because it is the last stretch of the run and at 20.5 miles it can be a killer.

The 25-year-old made her debut in the distance today not only to take home a bronze medal at the biggest-deal marathon, but she also ran 2:23:00 on the nose to record the fastest US female marathon debut so far.

"And I'm also very grateful for the opportunity to thank a city and the streets that changed my life", she said, "and help to empower millions of women all around the world and change the face of the sport".

Defending champion Atsede Baysa of Ethiopia slumped to 22nd place in 2:40:07. She's joined in the field by countrywoman Buzunesh Deba, the 2014 champion.

If she dropped out it would validate every doubter who said women couldn't run the marathon - so she kept running, refused to quit, and told Arnie that she'd finish the race "on [her] hands and knees, if she had to". "And you run it for the memory of all those young kids who died here four years ago".

It added to victories in London, New York City and Los Angeles. Hasay however, hung in strong in the front group of five with Valentine Kipketer competing for the leading spot.

Chelimo, who just made her debut in the marathon previous year, led the women through 30K in 1:43:40. Last year, he finished the Boston Marathon in under 6 hours.

Chelimo proved that not having experienced the Boston course before wasn't going to hold her back.

Runners in the Boston Marathon had high temperatures to deal with.

Switzer finished the race in four hours and twenty minutes. From there, it was obvious that the gold was hers.
