Harper's blast lifts Nationals over Phillies

Daniel Murphy #20 of the Washington Nationals game winning double in the tenth inning scores Bryce Harper #34 (not pictured) during a baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Nationals Park on April 14, 2017 in Washington, D.C. The Nationals won 3-2 in ten innings. Harper has hit 18 of his 125 big league homers against the Phillies. Aaron Nola had a lot of help in his lone win over Washington last week.

The Phils scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to take a 4-3 lead.

TIGERS 4, INDIANS 1: Matthew Boyd (2-1) allowed one run in six innings, and Alex Avila hit a two-run homer. They were beaten Sunday by Harper, who hit two home runs, showing that he is the level of star the Phillies have lacked for too long. The left-hander allowed two runs, five hits and two walks and struck out two.

"I wouldn't say demoralizing", said Jerad Eickhoff, whose above-average start was smeared by Harper's first home run, a two-run third-inning message. Benoit got ahead 0-2. The play at first was reviewed and the Phillies lost the challenge after a delay of 100 seconds. With a full count, Benoit left a fastball right over the heart of the plate, and Harper made him pay, crushing his second homer of the game onto the batter's eye.

Washington managed only four hits against Hellickson over seven innings.

Phillies: With RHP Clay Buchholz sidelined with a partial tear of his right flexor pronator mass, Mackanin said the team's four other starters will remain on schedule. The problem is that he hasn't received enough run support. He has made 44 starts for the Phillies and the team has averaged just 3.79 runs while he's been in the game.

Mariners 8, Rangers 7: Nelson Cruz singled in the tiebreaking run to cap a two-run, ninth-inning rally, and Seattle overcame a 6-1 deficit to complete a three-game sweep.

Brewers first baseman Eric Thames crushed his fifth home run in four games in a win against the Reds. That is, the opportunities to tilt a game may arrive early, or they may arrive late, or they may come around the seventh-inning stretch. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth inning to pick up his fifth save. With a runner on third and two outs, the Nats were able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but Tommy Joseph poked a single through the left side of the infield to tie the game.

The run was charged to Gonzalez.

Then Harper came to the plate with the game on the line and one homer already under his belt.

Frazier hit a three-run homer in the ninth.

It was Riddle's first career home run, and it came off reliever Addison Reed (0-1).

TORONTO - Trey Mancini homered twice for the second time in three games, a three-run shot off Ryan Tepera in the sixth and a solo drive off Matt Dermody in the eighth.

Ryan Schimpf's homer in the third inning was the only misstep by Colon, who walked one and struck out six while pitching in the 44th ballpark of his 20-year major league career. The Nationals have now committed 10 errors in their first 12 games. Herrera pinch-hit in the ninth and appeared to hurt himself running.

The Cubs slipped to 6-6 with their fourth loss in five games.

Health check Left fielder Howie Kendrick was out of the starting lineup because of soreness near his ribs.

Despite Hernandez's impressive start, there is still the popular notion that either his partner Freddy Galvis could get displaced either later this season or next year by top prospect J.P. Crawford, or that perhaps Crawford could be moved into Hernandez's spot at second.

Up next The Phillies are off on Monday.

Zach Eflin will be called up from Lehigh Valley on Tuesday night and be the Phillies starting pitcher against the Mets.

Eflin could only be recalled to replace Buchholz since it is less than 10 days since he was optioned out to the IronPigs.
