White House decides against releasing visitor records

These protests are on firm grounding.

The White House also said it has severed its contract with open.whitehouse.gov, the website that posts visitor log information as well as financial disclosure forms and information about salaries of White House employees. It is also deeply meaningful to know whether the president and staff are consulting various perspectives on critical issues or whether they only are listening to those who support existing positions. They see the logs as an important tool for monitoring which individuals or groups may be trying to influence government policy.

"In fairness, the Trump White House decision to close off the visitor logs needs to be put in the proper context of his predecessors" actions.

He announced on Friday that his administration will no longer follow the usual practice of releasing the visitor's log for the White House.

After some litigation, the Obama White House began releasing the visitor records late in 2009, Obama's first year in office. Most people don't even know that a detailed log of who comes to the White House is kept, much less that there is a debate over whether those logs should be released.

The White House should not backslide on transparency.

The intelligence source told me that he knows, "from talking to people in the intelligence community", that "the White House said, 'We are going to mobilize to find something to justify the President's tweet that he was being surveilled.' They put out an all-points bulletin"-a call to sift through intelligence reports-"and said, 'We need to find something that justifies the President's insane tweet about surveillance at Trump Tower.' And I'm telling you there is no way you get that from those transcripts, which are about as plain vanilla as can be".

This action enabled the Obama White House to appear to be promoting openness while providing no substantively useful information. On Monday, visitors to the site were told that it "is being updated". "He is the least transparent President-ever-and he ran on transparency".

Trump is the 45th President of the United States. The reality is different though, as Obama's action set no standard at all for transparency.
