Patriots' Super Bowl LI win was 'legendary'

Gronkowski asked Spicer if he needed help handling the press.

On Wednesday, April 19, the New England Patriots were in Washington, D.C. for a celebratory trip to the White House, a traditional meet-and-greet with the president in recognition of a major American sports championship.

Wednesday's visit also comes as the team grapples with the news that former Patriots star Aaron Hernandez was found dead in jail.

Trump says "no team has been good this long". "You pulled off the greatest Super Bowl comeback of all time".

Hernandez, who played for the Patriots from 2010 to 2012, was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction.

Gronkowski joined the rest of his teammates on the South Lawn for the ceremony, during which Trump praised individual players such as wide receivers Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman for their contributions during the Super Bowl.

At least five other Patriots players have said that they are not attending Wednesday's ceremony for political reasons, according to The Boston Globe.

As the New York Times noted, the attendance was frankly sort of sad compared to 2015, when then-President Barack Obama hosted a crowd of Super Bowl-winning Patriots players and staff more than twice the size, stretching into the stairs on either side of him.

The Patriots rallied from 25 points down to defeat the Atlanta Falcons in February.

Brady, a friend of Trump, cited "personal family matters" on why he was skipping the ceremony.

Six other Patriots also didn't attend the event.

Trump seemed to like that, never shy about mentioning his climb to the presidency, the foes he bested to reach the Republican nomination and the Oval Office, or boasting about the states he unexpectedly won in the general election. That's so sweet! Well, Belichick and Kraft tried to top that by presenting Trump with the traditional gift of his very own number 45 Patriots jersey.

McCourty said: "The basic reason for me is I don't feel accepted in the White House".

He also heaped praise upon Belichick, thanking him for writing a letter previous year in support of his candidacy for president. His relationship with Trump has already resulted in more negative attention than a man of his blandness cares for.
