Prosecutors said in court that Vera acted deceptively and had the boy and his father stay at her home while pretending to date the father.
As supportive as they might have been, Vera made a decision to have an abortion after school authorities began questioning her in February 2016.
Judge McSpadden told Vera this case will serve as an example to deter other teachers from crossing inappropriate boundaries, saying "We want our teachers to educate our children, to keep their hands off our children, to prepare them for the future". From that moment forward, the 24-year-old old teacher and her 13-year-old student hung out regularly and had sex.
Vera was a middle school teacher at Stovall Middle School when she began a relationship with one of her students during a summer school session in 2015. Vera could face five years in jail because she pleaded guilty on the lesser charge, otherwise she would have faced 20 years.
"That kid was always over (Vera's house) and she always told (neighbors) it was her brother", a neighbor told WFAA-ABC when news of the affair broke. Investigators said Vera expressed that she and the 13-year-old were in love. Vera became pregnant, but terminated the pregnancy upon learning that Child Protective Services had launched an investigation. The boy is now in foster care after it was learned the boy's parents were supportive of his relationship and Vera's pregnancy. When she was initially questioned by officials, she denied having any such relationship with the boy. During her investigation, Vera told an officer that she and the student kissed in the auto during their first meeting, and the next day when the boy's parents weren't at home, they reportedly had sex. Then, she went over to his house and was introduced as his girlfriend.
She had to wear a Global Positioning System tracker and was not allowed to go near any school or talk to children.
