Yogi Adityanath takes charge as UP CM

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Yogi Adityanath, center, is greeted after his election as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh during the party lawmakers' meeting Saturday in Lucknow, India. Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Goa CM Manohar Parrikar were also present.

Besides Keshav Maurya and Dinesh Sharma, other cabinet ministers sworn in include Surya Pratap Shahi, Suresh Kumar Khanna, Swami Prasad Maurya, Satish Mahana, Rajesh Agarwal, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who defected from Congress just before assembly elections were announced, Siddharth Nath Singh, Dara Singh Chauhan, Dharampal Singh, SP Singh Baghel and Satyadev Pachauri.

State BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi told PTI that the legislature party meeting will be held tomorrow at Lok Bhawan-the newly constructed chief minster's office located adjacent to the UP BJP office.

He took the oath of office at an open-air ceremony in the state capital Lucknow on Sunday, before shaking hands with Modi and other BJP elders who attended.

In a surprising choice, 45-year-old Yogi Adityanath (born, Ajay Singh Bisht), a five-time member of the Parliament, has been chosen as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Assembly election in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state is due in December.

In Gorakhpur, 300km to the east, a seer from Haridwar who had come to celebrate Adityanath's political elevation had to look beyond the continent to find a fitting analogy for the yogi's pre-eminence.

On portfolios, Mr. Sharma said no decision has been taken yet.

"Disturbance shouldn't be created in the name of celebrations", Chief Minister designate Yogi Adityanath said to them.

"PM @narendramodi says development & growth is his primary agenda".

The people of Uttar Pradesh will now be under a chief minister whose obnoxious statements from the past are reasons enough for anybody sensible to fear the road ahead for Uttar Pradesh.

After assuming charge, the UP CM reached out to the people through a series of tweets via his new official twitter handle assuring everyone irrespective of caste, creed and religion of clean, transparent and good governance. Party insiders said the overwhelming mandate has posed a fresh challenge for the BJP to meet sky-high expectations.

Adityanath, 44, was elected by state lawmakers on Saturday, a week after the BJP won a landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh by mobilising the Hindu vote. What makes him the most desirable choice to lead Uttar Pradesh on behalf of the Bhartiya Janta Party?
