Penn State to host several NCAA championships

The NCAA men's and women's cross country mid-Atlantic regional will return to the Penn State Golf Courses on November 9, 2018, and November 13, 2020. The city and the Garden won't have to wait as long this time, as the NCAA announced on Tuesday that Boston will host the 2022 Frozen Four. The 2019 regional will be held either March 29-30 or March 30-31, with the victor heading to the Frozen Four in Buffalo.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host several NCAA Championships", athletic director Sandy Barbour said in a news release.

One of the nation's premier ice facilities, Pegula Ice Arena opened in October 2013 and is the home of the Penn State men's and women's hockey teams.

Quinnipiac women's ice hockey made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 2015 and 2016 before missing out in 2017. "The PPL Center will provide a fun tournament atmosphere for the NCAA Men's Hockey regionals in Allentown". "It's an honor to have those efforts recognized with successful bids to host NCAA Championship events in our two newest sports and in two new, state-of-the-art facilities". There were no surprises in the East, as Worcester's DCU Center and Bridgeport's Webster Bank Arena will host regionals in 2018, followed by Manchester's SNHU Arena and Providence's Dunkin' Donuts Center in 2019.

The downtown Allentown arena, which has a standing-room capacity of over 9,000, will host the 2018 and 2019 NCAA Men's Hockey Midwest Regionals with Penn State University serving as the host institution. (The men's regionals are routinely held at off-campus facilities.) The Lehigh Valley rink is almost a three-hour drive from Pegula Ice Arena, but that's still considerably closer than the last Midwest Regional that was held in Cincinnati (seven-hour drive).

Boston last hosted the event in 2015, and the college hockey national semifinals and championship game most recently took place in The Hub in 2004 and 1998. "The last time we hosted in 2009 it was a big hit".
